Blogade Grows in Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Blogade, a summit meeting of some of the funkiest bloggers you ever want to meet, will touch down at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden on Sunday, October 12.

The event will be hosted by Flatbush Gardner, who took the photo accompanying this post, and it promises to be a blast.

The Schedule of Events looks something like this:

* 11am to 12noon: Food on your own at BBG's al fresco Terrace Cafe. Blogade attendees can sign in and get their name tags at the Blogade registration table near the Bonsai House.
* 12noon to 2pm: Main program in the Member's Room of the recently landmarked Laboratory and Administration Building. Meet Dave Allen, BBG's Web Manager! There will be some brief presentations, time for Q&A, and of course, the shout-out.
* 2pm to 3:30pm: Continue schmoozing as you explore the gardens on a guided tour of BBG just for those attending the Blogade!

RSVPs REQUIRED:

* BBG is offering free admission - and parking - to those attending the Blogade.
* Space in the Member's Room is limited.
* For free admission, please provide your real name.

These events are a great to meet other bloggers and they're always fun. So if you're a Brooklyn blogger, come and down and represent...or whatever the current expression is. You'll be glad you did. And so will we.

‘Permanently Closed’

And, so, another local landmark is gone. My sister and I passed by O’Sullivan’s Bar & Grill in Bay Ridge last night during our after-dinner walk and saw nothing but darkness. There were no lights shining from this old Irish saloon that the O’Sullivan family took over in 1934. There were no customers outside taking a cigarette break on Third Avenue; no voices, music or laughter emenating from the corner business on 89th Street. A dark bar on a Saturday night only means one thing, but I didn’t want to accept the grim reality. I had to walk up to the front door, grab hold of the handle and pull back. But the place was locked up tight. This morning I jumped on the Internet in hopes of learning that the owners were on vacation, or that they were renovating the place and would be reopening in grand style any day now. “Feel the power, yo, and plug it in!” – The Electric Company Theme Mount Newsprint is no more. Today is the last day of my week-long vacation, and even though I didn’t hit all the goals on the most recent edition of my To-Do list, I did make some progress in cleaning up my apartment. I decided to stay local, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. I had no urge to get onboard a flying Covid-19 test tube, and go someplace where all the points of interest are either closed or severely restricted. Most other countries aren’t allowing Americans entry anyway, given our appalling infection and death rates. My one trip during the week was a ferry ride to downtown Manhattan. This used to be my daily commute, but now, after nearly five months of quarantine, I felt like Magellan sailing off for parts unknown.
